A prevalent issue is to receive HTML instead of valid JSON back from the server. Fortunately, the problem is easily corrected. The issue is typically caused by a plugin and or theme that is protecting the WordPress site from public access.
To solve the issue, ensure that there is not login protect option enabled for any theme or plugin.
